Trains connect and save time, but above all help in emitting less carbon dioxide. Sustainability is at the centre of our reason for being, saving around 80% of carbon dioxide per person per journey.
High-Speed and Total Sustainability
Travelling by High-Speed train in Spain combines the following optimal qualities:
In a country with a radial configuration the size of ours, where the distances from Madrid are less than 700 km in the majority of cases, the train is the transport means that best meets these three premises.
Punctuality and comfort, together with easy access to train centres in city centres, mean that High-Speed journeys are more and more appreciated by Spanish travellers who at the same time help care for the environment.
The impact of climate change is beginning to have an important influence on our way of life, and we expect it to continue doing so in the coming years.
Leaders of Sustainability in Europe
Along the same lines, our commitment to sustainable connectivity and to clients who prefer to use “green” transport, has become the centre of our being. We are going to lead the sustainability market, thereby contributing to global sustainability objectives and to the UN’s Agenda 2030. Sustainable connectivity is possible, and we are working every day to achieve it. Our commitment goes further than the train itself as a vertebral axis of mobility.
We aim to lead the connectivity of different sustainable transport modes in a way that the entire journey of the client from start to finish meets the most rigorous environmental standards. Punctuality and comfort, together with easy access to train stations in city centres, mean that High-Speed journeys are more and more appreciated by Spanish travellers at the same time as helping to take care of the environment.
A more sustainable Spain and Europe
Recently, the European Council agreed to a new objective in the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from now to 2030 of at least 55% as against the 40% forecast until now.
The EU has decided to be more ambitious in the next decade and to update its action framework on climate issues and energy on its path towards climate neutrality by 2050 in accordance with the Paris Agreement.

Comparision of the traveller transport

Grammes of CO2 per passenger and kilometre
A wide range of transport options exist, but it is not always to choose the one with the lowest emissions. One way of measuring their environmental impact is to analyse CO2 emissions per passenger and kilometre travelled.
Vehicle and number of passengers
CO2 emissions are calculated using an estimate of the amount of CO2 per passenger and kilometre. Different means of transport are analysed in the estimates, using the average number of passengers per transport means used. As the number of passengers in a vehicle increases, the total CO2 emissions of said vehicle increases, but the emissions per passenger decreases. It is estimated that the level of emissions of inland ships are 245 g CO2/km but comparative data with other means are not yet available:
European Environmental Agency. The estimates are based on the TRACCS database, 2013 and on the TERM 027 indicator.
Impact on the environment on the Madrid-Barcelona route
Frecciarossa 1000 is the first High-Speed train in the world to obtain the EPD environmental impact certification (EPD) because it manages to hold CO2 emissions to 28 grammes per passenger/kilometre. Our trains are electric, and the energy is 100% renewable under contract with Adif, which makes our service 100% sustainable.

The 10 Commitments of iryo
We are aware of the role the transport sector plays in responsible growth and we try to contribute to the improvement of the quality of life in the country.
Atmospheric pollution is a complex phenomenon caused by multiple factors and which effects above all large urban areas, with a high impact on human health.
Our trains are the most silent ones of the European rail fleet, helping to reduce noise both inside and outside the train.
Our trains are totally new with maximum consumption optimization and the most efficient ones in the current European fleet.
Our trains are manufactured with 98% recycled materials.
We are certified in sustainable practices by AENOR.
(i.e., ISO 14001 and/or ISO 50001)
We will insist by contract that all the energy we use in our services and our offices come from renewable sources.
All our fleet of auxiliary vehicles (maintenance, Management) will be electric.
The collection, processing and recycling of waste has been part of our commitment from the beginning. Our programme is the most advanced with regards to efficiency, being classifiable as 100% sustainable.
Both in our operations area as in our client services area, our objective is zero paper.
